The origins of the Obbi Oss or Obby Oss are lost in time, but there are several types of Obby Oss. The two most recognised varieties are the ridden horses as seen in the Padstow Obby Oss celebrations and the Penn Glas (Literally translated as grey/blue/green head) such as Penglaz the Penzance Golowan Festival obby oss. These mystical beasts appear more commonly through the approach to Beltane with the Penn Glas preferring twilight and nighttime. Obby oss nature is unpredictable and are not opposed to biting or kicking their human observers. It is said that a drunken Truro maid once slapped an ‘oss on its leathery backside only to be kicked so hard, she ended up over the Tamar in Devon. If you are lucky enough to ride an obbi oss it is said that they can travel from Madron to Tregajorran in less than five minutes, so hold on tight!
